The future we want/demand to live in - Hawaiʻi Women and Girls Video Storytelling Initiative

As a feminist filmmaking organization with strong ties to our local communities, we are offering our experience and expertise in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi State Commission on the Status of Women and other local organizations to uplift the Building Bridges, Not Walking on Backs - A Hawaiʻi Feminist Economic Recovery Plan for COVID-19 and the Feminist Economic Response Team.

We are launching a call for submissions for short videos that capture women and girls’ struggles and dreams for a gender-responsive recovery plan for COVID-19.

We need to ensure women and women’s groups have a voice in decision-making around pandemic response. In this process, we need to pay specific attention to the needs and perspectives of women, girls, femme-identified and nonbinary people, women of color and Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and immigrant women in Hawaiʻi.

Submissions will go through an editorial panel and if approved by the panel, HWF may pay an honorarium of $500 for video.

The curated videos will be instrumental in implementing recovery and stimulus actions that include input from the impacted, essential sectors that employ a majority of women and organizations that serve women, girls and people who identify as women, femme and nonbinary people. This process will advance larger, long-term structural changes that improve the outcomes for Hawaiʻi’s women, girls, and expansive people.

The video need to be focused primarily on the needs and perspectives of women, girls, femme-identified and nonbinary people, women of color, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and immigrant women in Hawaiʻi.

The short videos can address any of the following:

  • How federal COVID-response funds coming to the state should be spent

  • Value of women’s work

  • New opportunities for more sustainable economic livelihoods

  • How the state could reshape and diversify the economy, making Hawaiʻi more resilient to future economic downturns

  • Feminist women’s leadership

  • Childcare, education and healthcare

  • Women’s financial independence

  • Gender-based violence prevention

  • The digital gender gap among low and middle-income women and their family in Hawaiʻi

  • Response and recovery, but also of repair and revival: repair of historic harms and intergenerational trauma playing out as male domination, gender-based violence, economic insecurity, poor health and mass incarceration

  • Place-based practices and knowledge, and self determination

  • Any other topics/themes/issue not listed here that you deem important
