HONOLULU SCREENING TO FEATURE Q&A WITH YOUNG FILMMAKERS
Honolulu, HI— Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking is excited to offer an advance screening of the shorts films produced during the 2016 Spring Making Media That Matters (MMTM), a 13-week all-girls filmmaking afterschool program, designed to make films for civic engagement and social justice.
Four crews, sixteen teens, and fourteen creative staff members produced four short films based on issues they feel strongly about: child poverty, beauty standards, body image, and cis-heteronormativity. “Don't make assumptions” and “We're enough as we are” are some of the messages these young filmmakers want to convey through their short films, as well as the desire for viewers to move beyond “staying in [their] own little world."
“We offer programs like MMTM so that girls stop being recipients of media that others create and became makers of their own,” states Vera Zambonelli of Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking. “We create the conditions that facilitate the expression of their brilliance. We do not ‘empower’ them, they are powerful, we just help in unleashing their might, energy, and creativity through film! We create media conducive to reframing the way adults and allies think about girls and young women and what matters to them."
Programs like MMTM are key in engaging more girls and young women in filmmaking to produce films. These films are informed by participants' perspectives and meant to redress the gender inequity that characterizes the film industry.
During the showcase, we will also launch our crowdfunding campaign to support the 2016 Summer Reel Camps for Girls, which are week-long, hands-on filmmaking camp for girls. For more information on our summer camps: http://bit.ly/SRC4G

About Making Media That Matters
Making Media That Matters is a filmmaking program for girls (trans, cis, and non-binary). During the program, participants learn how to make a short film and develop film and critical-thinking skills by examining issues that affect them and their communities. Making Media That Matters provides a platform for girls to tell their stories and be agents of social change through film. Film for civic engagement and social justice.
