3 Acts Structure

The Set-Up & Inciting Incident:

  • Introduce: Who?  What?  Why?  Where? When? How?

  • Inciting incident: What happens to set the story in motion?  How is it connected to what your main character really wants?

  • What do your character(s) want?

  • If you have more than one character, do they want different things?

  • Climax: What happens that changes your main character? What is the peak moment of the conflict?

  • Highest point of emotional intensity and the moment when the action of the story turns toward the conclusion.

  • What does your main character do in order to get what they want, need, desire, or reach their goal?

The Resolution:

  • Ending the conflict

  • How has your main character changed?

  • What is the new normal?

  • What do you want the audience to feel at the end?
